The Dallas Park and Recreation Department is among the largest municipal park systems in the country. We manage 393 parks spread over 18,341 acres of land, 155 miles of trails, 27 lakes, 42 recreation centers, six golf courses, five tennis centers, 17 community pools, one indoor aquatic facility, Bahama Beach Water park, and 11 spraygrounds.
That’s a lot of ground to cover and our system is enhanced by the work that our volunteers perform. April is National Volunteer Month so I want to personally thank each of our volunteers, who are making a big difference in our community.
Our volunteers are invaluable at our recreation centers. They’re making a difference in the lives of children, teens, and senior adults. Some volunteers are making momentous decisions to preserve our natural assets by planting trees, rebuilding our blackland prairies and creating pollinator gardens.
Last year more than 300 individuals and groups gave our park system a total of 276,841 volunteer hours, a monetary value of $6,478,536. That is an incredible gift of time, talent, and financial support on behalf of our park system and the City of Dallas.
Volunteers are vital to the Park and Recreation Department. Thank you for making our system a treasure.
